Six Minute Solution

We a have started the six minute solution. The Six Minute Solution is a reading fluency program. "The goal of the program is to help teachers provide students with concentrated practice on phonetic elements, sight word vocabulary, and expository passage reading in order to build overall reading fluency and boost achievement."

"Six Minute Solution is based on the research of repeated readings and peer-assisted learning strategies, and partner reading is the primary activity of the program."

addtional information can be found at www.fcrr.org/FCRRReports/PDF/SixMinuteSolution.pdf

  1. I think that highlighting speed while trying to read with expression and no errors are contraditory. Reading aloud is different from reading to self where skipping small words that don't change meaning and expression is just in your head. Are the kids being taught the difference between reading aloud and reading to self? What should be emphasized in this 6 minute solution exercise? Fluency, yes. But no errors and expression over speed? I think the natural competitive atmosphere promotes speed and not really fluency.
